Mindfulness in Law Society

Student Division

Purpose. The Mindfulness in Law Society - Student Division (“MILS-SD”) seeks to improve the mental health and wellbeing of law students across the nation by connecting and supporting individual students and student groups interested in contemplative practice.

Connect. The Mindfulness In Law Society consists of practicing attorneys, judges, professors, and legal support personnel in every area of the law. As a member of MILS-SD you can connect and network with a community of legal professionals who care deeply about mental health and work-life balance. We look forward to growing with you as you progress in your meditation and your legal practice.

Meditate. Our organization is centered on meditation practice. MILS members and leadership are steeped in a wide range of contemplative practices. We offer two weekly guided meditations that are appropriate for all experience levels. For those interested in deepening their meditation practice, we periodically offer weekend retreats guided by members of MILS leadership.

Grow. Promoting mindfulness in law schools is a central goal of MILS-SD. Whether you are an individual student hoping to create community through meditation or part of an existing student organization, we are here to support your growth.

  • Information Session: Interested in bringing mindfulness to your law school? An Introduction to Mindfulness session is the right place to start. These one-hour sessions cover the basics of mindfulness, its origins, mental health benefits, and how to start a personal practice. Meditation is best understood through experience, so all of our introductory sessions involve a short guided practice.

  • Consultation: MILS leadership is comprised of attorneys and law professors with extensive experience building mindfulness programs within law schools. If you are interested in starting a mindfulness organization but are curious about how to get funding, promote your programs, and retain members, we are here answer your questions! Sign up for a Consultation to schedule an informational call with a member of our leadership team.

  • Contemplative Retreat: Law school can be stressful. We believe that contemplative practice (meditation, yoga, journaling, etc.) is a great antidote to that stress. MILS-SD offers daylong retreats for law schools. These retreats allow students to disconnect and rejuvenate through guided practice in a communal setting. These sessions are perfect for mental health weeks or in conjunction with student wellness initiatives.

Student Ambassador Program

Engage. Law students with a passion for meditation are invited to join our Student Ambassadors program. Our Student Ambassador program provides opportunity for personal growth while remaining sensitive to the time constraints many law students face. As a Student Ambassador, you chose an area that fits your skills and interests (marketing, finance, governance, etc.) and agree to assist MILS leadership with a project in that area. All student ambassadors will have an opportunity to attend a MILS national board meeting and to discuss their project with our community.
